Rocky Mountain Institute Innovation Center
The Innovation Center is among the highest performing buildings in the world, using only 16 kBtu/sf/yr in the coldest U.S. climate. It is a restorative, resilient, net zero venue where global energy leaders convene and collaborate to transform the energy system. The building is a passive, climatically responsive showcase for cold regions, highlighting proper orientation, a highly insulative envelope, exceptional daylighting, solar gain and shading strategies, natural ventilation, thermal mass, and night-time flush. These passive measures eliminate the need for mechanical cooling and central heating. The innovative Hyper Chair by Personal Comfort Systems provides individual heating and cooling, dramatically improving worker comfort at a wider range of room temperatures, while significantly reducing building energy usage.
